Foot and leg pain from standing for a long time

Are you one of those people who have to stand for long periods of time at work?

Standing for long periods of time strains the muscles in both legs, back, and neck, causing constant tension and reducing blood flow to the muscles. If there is no change in posture or position while standing, it can have negative effects on the body of the person working in this way, such as:

  • I experienced fatigue and muscle pain in my neck, back, and legs.
  • This causes blood to pool in the legs and feet, resulting in swollen or varicose veins.
  • This can cause temporary numbness in the joints of the spine, hips, knees, and feet, and may lead to osteoarthritis caused by damaged ligaments.

Designing workplaces for people who stand while working.

  • The workplace should be redesigned or rearranged to provide sufficient space for comfortable movement and physical activity.
  • Chairs or benches should be provided near the work area so that those who stand to work can sit down and rest their feet.
  • The workbench's height can be adjusted so that the work is at a height that is suitable for the operator's height when standing and working.
  • The work should be placed within easy reach.
  • Floor mats or carpets made of suitable materials that are neither too hard nor too soft should be provided to prevent fatigue from standing for long periods of time. Standing on concrete , cement, or metal floors should be avoided.
  • The work area must be level, clean, non-slippery, and free of obstructions or clutter.
  • Provide adequate and appropriate lighting for jobs that require standing.

Here are several self-help tips:

  • Stand on a soft surface . A soft surface reduces pressure on your feet. You can use a soft doormat; you don't need to buy an expensive standing mat. You can test a mat by taking off your shoes and standing on it. Then, try standing on one foot. If it feels comfortable and stable, it's a good choice.
  • Wear shoes with soft soles and that are slightly loose. Soft soles help reduce pressure on your feet, as does an insole. Choosing loose shoes is important because your feet may swell slightly in the evening from standing for long periods.
  • High heels should not be worn at work. In cases of severe heel pain, high heels no higher than 2 inches may be worn to help reduce pressure on the heels.
  • Stand at a high table or vending machine, supporting your weight in front of you with your arms or elbows. Occasionally, lean your buttocks or back against a wall to reduce the pressure on your back and feet.
  • Take frequent breaks from standing; extend one leg to the side, or use a footrest that elevates the foot about 4-6 inches from the ground.
  • Use a semi-sitting/semi-standing chair for counter staff or factory work.
  • If the work can be done both standing and sitting, alternate between standing and sitting, but the work environment must be arranged appropriately. For example, a standing desk shouldn't be too low that it forces the user to bend their back. Consider setting up two sets of desks, one for standing and one for sitting, and have employees switch roles periodically.
  • When you feel tired, walk around for 2-3 minutes, then sit down. Elevate both legs and rest them on the seat of another chair, keeping your feet about knee-level. This helps blood return from your legs to your heart more efficiently, preventing varicose veins. Take breaks when you can; instead of standing and talking, sit down and elevate your legs. You can also alternately flex your toes, left and right.
  • When you get home, lie down with your feet against a wall, about half a meter off the ground, and alternately flex your toes upwards on both sides for about 10 minutes. Exercise by walking, running, or swimming for 15-20 minutes, three times a week, to help improve blood circulation to your legs. Get enough rest by sleeping at least 6 hours a night.

Foot and leg pain caused by standing for a long time?

Are you one of those people whose work involves standing for a long period of time ? Standing requires muscles from both legs, from the back and the neck. The longer we stand, the tenser these muscles are, which causes less blood flow in these areas. Moreover, Without changing position can badly affect your body, such as;

  • Fatigue and muscle pain in the neck, back and legs
  • Causing congestion in the legs and feet which will result in swollen veins, bulging or varicose veins.
  • Temporary numbness on the hips, knees and feet area, including joints in the spine. This may lead to osteoarthritis caused by damaged tendons.

Provide a suitable ergonomic workplace for standing people.

  • It's necessary to redesign or rearrange your workplace to have enough open space for your workers being able to move around comfortably.
  • Provide a chair or a bench near the working area for resting.
  • The height of the worktable can be adjusted preventing your workers from bending down or reaching while working.
  • The work itself should also be in a proper distance that can be easily handled.
  • Provide a rubber mat or an anti-fatigue mat or a standing pad made of a specific material which is not too hard or too soft. This helps prevent fatigue from standing for an extended time. Avoid standing directly on a cement, concreate or metal floor.
  • The working area should be flat, clean, not slippery, without any obstacles or any blockages.
  • Provide sufficient lighting around the working area.

As for an individual, these are recommendations

  • Stand on a soft floor. Soft surface can reduce the pressure on your feet. You can buy a soft mat. There's no need to buy an expensive one. All you need to do is check a mat by standing on it with a bare foot for a while. Put all your weighs on one leg. If you can stand firmly and comfortably on it , that means the mat is the right one for you.
  • The sole inside your shoe is also important. Wearing a pair of shoes with soft sole. Soft sole serves the same purpose as softness or the floor. The shoe size shouldn't be too fit either because at the end of the day your feet tend to swell from standing whole day long.
  • Avoid wearing high heels while working if that causes heel pain. You might want to reduce the height to maximum 2-inch high to help reduce the pressure on the heel.
  • Lean on a table, counter or a wall allowing your feet to rest for a while.
  • Another way to let your feet rest is to shift your weight on one leg at a time or use a footrest with 4-6 inches high.
  • Using a specific chair, such as a bar stool, allows you to sit while working but still be able to reach your desk freely and comfortably, which is an ideal solution for working at a counter or in a factory.
  • If during your working time you can change your position from standing to sitting and vice versa, then switch your position whenever you can. However, the difference between these two positions shouldn't be too wide. Providing two sets of working point is also an option.
  • When feeling tired, take a bit break by walking back and forth for a few minutes. Then take a seat and rest both of your legs on another chair. Your feet should be on your knee level. This will help your blood flow and prevent varicose veins. If you have a free moment, don't just stand and chat. You can enjoy chatting with your colleagues while sitting. You can also exercise your feet by moving them up and down as well.
  • Once you're at home, lie on the floor. Lift your legs about 0.5 meter high and put them against a wall, exercise your feet while doing so for about 10 minutes. Walking, jogging or swimming (for 15-20 minutes) 3 times a week is also help improve the blood circulation on your legs. Sleep at least 6 hours a day.
