Foot and leg pain caused by standing for a long time?

Are you one of those people whose work involves standing for a long period of time?

Standing requires muscles from both legs, from the back and the neck. The longer we stand, the tenser these muscles are, which causes less blood flow in these areas. Moreover, Without changing position can badly affect your body, such as;

  • Fatigue and muscle pain in the neck, back and legs
  • Causing congestion in the legs and feet which will result in swollen veins, bulging or varicose veins.
  • Temporary numbness on the hips, knees and feet area, including joints in the spine. This may lead to osteoarthritis caused by damaged tendons.
  • Provide a suitable ergonomic workplace for standing people.
  • It’s necessary to redesign or rearrange your workplace to have enough open space for your workers being able to move around comfortably.
  • Provide a chair or a bench near the working area for resting.
  • The height of the worktable can be adjusted preventing your workers from bending down or reaching while working.
  • The work itself should also be in a proper distance that can be easily handled.
  • Provide a rubber mat or an anti-fatigue mat or a standing pad made of a specific material which is not too hard or too soft. This helps prevent fatigue from standing for an extended time. Avoid standing directly on a cement, concreate or metal floor.
  • The working area should be flat, clean, not slippery, without any obstacles or any blockages.
  • Provide sufficient lighting around the working area.
  • As for an individual, these are recommendations
  • Stand on a soft floor. Soft surface can reduce the pressure on your feet. You can buy a soft mat. There’s no need to buy an expensive one. All you need to do is check a mat by standing on it with a bare foot for a while. Put all your weighs on one leg. If you can stand firmly and comfortably on it , that means the mat is the right one for you.
  • The sole inside your shoe is also important. Wearing a pair of shoes with soft sole. Soft sole serves the same purpose as softness or the floor. The shoe size shouldn’t be too fit either because at the end of the day your feet tend to swell from standing whole day long.
  • Avoid wearing high heels while working if that causes heel pain. You might want to reduce the height to maximum 2-inch high to help reduce the pressure on the heel.
  • Lean on a table, counter or a wall allowing your feet to rest for a while.
  • Another way to let your feet rest is to shift your weight on one leg at a time or use a footrest with 4-6 inches high.
  • Using a specific chair, such as a bar stool, allows you to sit while working but still be able to reach your desk freely and comfortably, which is an ideal solution for working at a counter or in a factory.
  • If during your working time you can change your position from standing to sitting and vice versa, then switch your position whenever you can. However, the difference between these two positions shouldn’t be too wide. Providing two sets of working point is also an option.
  • When feeling tired, take a bit break by walking back and forth for a few minutes. Then take a seat and rest both of your legs on another chair. Your feet should be on your knee level. This will help your blood flow and prevent varicose veins. If you have a free moment, don’t just stand and chat. You can enjoy chatting with your colleagues while sitting. You can also exercise your feet by moving them up and down as well.
  • Once you’re at home, lie on the floor. Lift your legs about 0.5 meter high and put them against a wall, exercise your feet while doing so for about 10 minutes. Walking, jogging or swimming (for 15-20 minutes) 3 times a week is also help improve the blood circulation on your legs. Sleep at least 6 hours a day.
